Job Description:
An experienced engineer is needed to manage and provide technical coordination of sub-teams of mechanical, structural, composite, electrical and controls engineers designing the next generation of wind turbines, scaling up production volume, reducing cost and supporting the existing turbine’s production.
Probably with a mechanical engineering background candidates should be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge across engineering disciplines, ideally with experience of:
- Bringing complex engineered designs into production
- Design for manufacture
- Rotating machinery
- Power generation
- Design for coastal / corrosive environments
- Integration of composite materials
- Integration of electrical and electronic components
Key Accountabilities:
- Coordination of engineering development work across the team
- To play a key role in the design of the next generation of turbine and in customisation of the product International markets
- Drawing in industrial experience and contacts to guide engineering decisions.
Supervision of employees:
The role incorporates the management and supervision of the engineering team via six direct reports: Principle Mechanical, Aerodynamics, Structural, Electrical, Controls Engineers and the Design Manager. Working with the Programme Manager to deliver on time, budget and to quality engineering solutions. The post holder reports directly to, and is accountable to, the Chief Technology Officer.
Major Challenges of the job:
- To quickly develop a holistic understanding of the turbine technology and the interdependencies between the turbine’s components
- To juggle priorities between optimisation of the current product and investment in the next generation
- To guide what work should be done in house and where we can partner- and selection and close management of those partners to support both debugging and development work
- To be able to think strategically but also apply knowledge in a practical context i.e. operate at both a management and specialist level
Candidates are sought with experience from one or more of the following fields:
- Large Wind
- Marine Renewables
- Automotive
- Aerospace
- Small Wind
- General Industrial Engineering
- Power Generation
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
- Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline
- Chartered engineer
- 10years + of relevant industrial experience
- Demonstrable experience managing teams
- DFMEA & PFMEA experience
- APQP preferable
- 8D
- Working in and acting as engineering lead of projects
- Experienced in working with a matrix style of resource allocation
